Posted by Bill D on 03 February 2016 06:21 PM

Note: this How-To details the installation steps using Windows Server 2016 Standard.  These step may differ slightly for other versions of Windows Server.

Installation Steps

  1. Download Required Software
  2. Add Roles and Features to Windows Server
  3. Configure IIS Application Pool
  4. Install SQL Server
  5. Install Access Manager (AMS)
  6. Activate AMS
  7. Configure Database
  8. Configure AMS Instance

Step 1:  Download Required Software

A detailed list of requirements and download links can be found in this article:

ACTAtek AMS Installation Files

Step 2: Add Roles and Features to Windows Server

Note: This section details a general IIS configuration that is highly compatible with all features and addon software.

Using Windows Server Manager, Add the Roles and Features detailed in the screenshots below:

Continue with the installation of the Web Server Role.

Step 3: Configure IIS Application Pool

Note: This step is only necessary if the server will host other web applications.  If AMS is the only web application hosted on the server, you can skip this step.

Launch IIS Manager from Windows Server Manager:

Drill down in the Connections pane and right click on the Application Pools to Add Application Pool:

Name the new application pool "AMS" and ensure that it is using .Net version 4.xx.

Click OK to create the new application pool.

Step 4: Installing SQL Server

Using the Microsoft SQL Server Express installation file, install SQL Server using the screenshots below as a guide:

Take note of the Instance Name.  You will need this when configuring AMS.

Important: Be sure to select the non-default option for "Mixed Mode" Authentication.  You will also need to provide a password for SQL's "sa" administrator user.

Continue through the rest of the installation dialogs.

Step 5: Install Access Manager (AMS)

Extract the AMS installation package onto the server's hard drive.  Browse to the "Release" folder and execute the setup.exe file.

The setup process will attempt to install several requisite components.  You will be prompted to install each required component.  Confirm the installation of each component until the main installation screen below is displayed:

If you chose to create a new Application Pool for AMS in Step 3, be sure to select the correct Application pool in the following step!  If you do not need a seperate Application pool for AMS, and skipped Step 3, then leave the default settings.  Failure to choose the correct Application pool at this Step will require manually specifying the Application Pool for several AMS sub applications!

Continue through the rest of the installation dialogs.

Step 6: Activate AMS

The AMS installation will attempt to open the AMS web application in the default browser.  If it is not successful, open a web browser and paste this link into the address bar:

Once loaded, click on the login link at the top right of the screen:

You will be presented with an Activation screen.  The Product ID is generated by the server and used for licensing the ACTAtek terminals with the server.  Please copy and paste the Product ID into an email and send it to your sales representative.  If you were given a Trial Key to assist in the installation, you may use that temporarily to continue with the configuration of AMS.

Using the Activation Key provided by your sales representative, paste it into the text box and click Submit:

Once the instance of AMS has been activated, you should see a login screen:

Step 7: Configure Database

Log into AMS using "admin" as the default Username and "1" as the default Password:

Click on the Control Panel tab in the main navigation header:

Click on the Configure Database icon:

Select SQL Server as the Database Type and fill in database connection information as shown below.  When finished, click on the Setup button:

If successful, you should see a screen like this:

Step 8: Configure AMS Instance

Click on the Setup Server icon:

In the Server Setup page configure the following items:

Terminal Group: This is simply a name for the server instance.  Use "AMS" or any other name you prefer.

Server IP Address: The server MUST have a static IP address.  Enter the static IP address for the server in this field

TimeZone:  Enter the timezone that the Windows Server is configured to use.

SNTP Server (optional):  Check this option and enter a valid SNTP server if you choose to use this option.

Agent(Log) Server IP Address: This should be the static IP address of the server.

Magic String:  This is a user defined string that is used to encrypt the Agent log communication with the server (e.g. "actatek1234").

Event Log's Port: This should remain "80"

When finished, click on the Setup button.

This completes the initial configuration of AMS!
